My daughter is away on a camping trip this week. As a surprise, I have spent some time sprucing up her bedroom, including buying her a vintage desk and hanging a bulletin board. I thought I should hang a few things on the bulletin board to inspire her. I pulled out some old boxes of ephemera that I have collected over the (oh my goodness) past 20 or more years to see what I could find. Aside from the few postcards I hung up for her, I found these treasures as well.
Above on the right are two (I believe) Arthur Steiglitz photographs of "Rebecca" that I photocopied years ago because I found her features so striking. I found the smaller, torn photograph on the left on a sidewalk in New Haven, CT one day while in graduate school. It appears that the woman is holding a child, whose hands are touching the woman's face. Don't ask me why I saved this.
My friend Suzan gave me these tiny prints when we were at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA. I usually don't like art made exclusively with primary colors, but these are charming.
I was happy to rediscover this 1920's photo of my maternal grandmother, Ivis, and her friends. I'm not totally clear on the story behind the photo, but I believe they were camping. They are wearing pajamas. The detail that sticks most clearly in my mind is that they have all had their hair cut short. My grandmother is on the far right. That bob earned her the nickname "Frenchy."
This came into my possession after my dad died 10 years ago. It is a card he made for his parents back in 1938. He was just about 7 years old, a year older than my son is now. I'm am amazed with how neat his handwriting is. I had totally forgotten that I had this.
This is an old postcard of a road, Torrey's Woods Road, very near where I grew up. The road is a little wider now, with a modern guardrail, but otherwise it looks pretty much the same.
Have a nice weekend. XO Maribeth
