I continue to be continually upset by the British Petroleum oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. In many ways it is so unbelievable, but in many other ways it is totally predictable. I'm ready to make some significant lifestyle changes to alter my use of fossil fuels, but truly it is the corporate structure and governments that need to substantially change. I keep my fingers crossed that President Obama will lead us to a new energy structure. I'm not holding my breath though.
I keep thinking of all the creatures that live in the sea. The plants, coral, fish, mammals, plankton, bugs, shellfish, and so much more. The bottom dwellers and the birds that feed off the surface. This oil is destroying them and their habitat. And I can't even start thinking about the wetlands and shores.
I want to make some of the sea dwellers. I've cut out these coral pieces and plan to mount them in a base. I'm also thinking shells, fish, starfish, and sand dollars. As I made the two new crochet-covered stones in white thread, I thought of nets. Fishermen's nets that now sit idle because the water is polluted.
Check out Bill McKibben. He's smart, and a hopeful realist (plus, he's from Vermont). I plan to read his new book "Eaarth." He is also the leader of 350.org.
